Strengthening Global and National Capacities for Risk Reduction
UNDP supports countries in disaster risk issues and in the assessment of national capacities to address these risks. These include human, financial, technical and legislative capacity; civil society awareness and preparedness; and the institutional, operational and coordination systems required for effectively managing and reducing risk. The assessment of these resources plays an important role in determining priorities and translating them into plans and programmes.
At the municipal level, UNDP promotes urban risk assessments and supports local authorities in the strengthening of plans for high-risk cities.
At the regional level, UNDP supports the development of regional disaster risk reduction strategies, programmes and information exchange networks to address cross-border risk issues and to strengthen organizations working on natural disaster reduction.
At the global level, UNDP is developing practical guidance on governance for disaster risk reduction. UNDP is also engaged with the Secretariat of the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction and other partners to initiate a Global Forum on management practices in urban contexts. The objective is to integrate urban disaster risk reduction concerns into city planning agendas.
