Our LeadershipKathleen Cravero, Assistant Administrator and Director
Kathleen Cravero brings over two decades of experience in international development, as well as first-hand knowledge on a range of development issues, from newly emerging democracies to conflict and emergency situations. Before joining the Bureau for Crisis Prevention and Recovery, Ms. Cravero built her career with UNICEF, WHO and UNDP. From March 2000 to March 2005, she served as Deputy Executive Director of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS with responsibilities in the areas of governance, resource mobilization, advocacy and leadership initiatives. Since April 2005, Ms. Cravero is Director of UNDP’s Bureau for Crisis Prevention and Recovery. As such, she leads the efforts of the Bureau around the world to restore the quality of life for people who have been devastated by natural disaster or violent conflict. Operating through some 50 country offices, the Bureau provides a bridge between the humanitarian agencies that handle immediate needs and the long-term development phase following recovery. Carving stability out of chaos, the Bureau continues to seek new ways of preventing conflicts and doing business – faster, earlier and in riskier situations. It does so by supporting UNDP in reducing the risk and impact of natural disasters, preventing armed conflicts, and assisting recovery from crisis. Advancing gender equality is a long-standing concern for Ms. Cravero. She chairs the Steering Committee of 'Stop Rape Now – UN Action Against Sexual Violence in Conflict', which unites the work of 12 UN entities with the goal of ending sexual violence in conflict. From 2005 to 2008, she chaired the Leadership Council of the Global Coalition on Women and AIDS, a group of prominent personalities who advocate publicly on the issue of women and AIDS. The Global Coalition, which was launched in March 2003 by Ms. Cravero, is a broad-based network of partners and organizations working to mitigate the impact of AIDS on women and girls worldwide. Ms. Cravero served as UN Resident Coordinator/Humanitarian Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Burundi (1998-2000); UNICEF Representative in Uganda (1994-1998); External Relations Officer of the World Health Organization Global Programme on AIDS (1992-1994); UNICEF Senior Health Advisor (1988-1992); and UNICEF Programme Coordinator in Chad (1985-1988). Dr. Cravero is also a Board Member of the Conflict Prevention and Peace Forum. She holds a Ph.D. in Political Science and a M.P.H. in Public Health. John Ohiorhenuan, Senior Deputy Director, NY
