Consolidating peace in Nepal

The past year has seen rapid change in Nepal. Following a ‘people’s movement’, which demanded a return to democracy and a new constitution, a peace agreement was signed between a new government and the Maoists rebels, ending 11 years of armed conflict. UNDP moved quickly to support the peace process by creating a Peacebuilding and Recovery Unit and engaging international and national experts to develop programmes to support the transition to peace. Promoting peace in Southern Sudan

After more than two decades of war, the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) was concluded between the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Sudan People’s Liberation Army and Government of Sudan in January of 2005. The agreement established a framework for a political solution to the civil conflict based on justice, peace and democracy. The signing of the CPA and the subsequent adoption of an Interim National Constitution, Interim Constitution of Southern Sudan, and state constitutions in the South ushered in a transitional legal framework and more equitable social, economic, and political development.  During the week of International Women’s Day from 5 to 8 March 2007, UN Action against Sexual Violence in Conflict organized events in New York, Geneva and Nairobi. UN Action against Sexual Violence in Conflict is a joint initiative of 10 UN system entities (DPKO, OCHA, OHCHR, UNDP, UNFPA, UNHCR, UNICEF, UNIFEM, WFP and WHO), with the goal of ending and responding to sexual violence in crisis and recovery situations.
