Ceremonial Hand over of the Report on Legal Empowerment of the Poor
Deputy Secretary-General: ASHA-ROSE MIGIRO*
03 June 2008

I want to welcome this Report and applaud the work of the independent Commission on Legal Empowerment of the Poor. I commend the co-chairs and the 21 commissioners for their hard work.

Let me also take a moment to recognize the importance of the legal empowerment agenda on poverty reduction and achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. The Commission’s work is consistent with UN priorities and relevant to the UN Development agenda.

We recognize that action on this agenda should flow from UN states and organizations, but I want to say that the office of the Secretary General will do what is in its power to support the Legal Empowerment Agenda. We look forward to reviewing this report in greater detail.
