UNDP Goodwill Ambassador Drogba fights poverty in a new advertisement
Geneva (14 July 2009) - Didier Drogba, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Goodwill Ambassador, is teaming up against poverty on a new UNDP advertisement to garner support for achieving the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in Africa. World-renowned photographer Rankin photographed the football star for this series of UNDP pro bono advertisements. The advertisement is part of a campaign that revolves around the concept of "Teaming Up Against Poverty" to achieve the MDGs.

UNDP Guide Seeks to Strengthen Commodities Exports for Developing Countries
Geneva (10 July 2009) - A new publication from the UN Development Programme, Commodity Development Strategies in the Integrated Framework has emerged from the recognition of the fact that primary commodities including agricultural and mineral commodities are the main source of income, employment and trade for most poor countries. Development of this sector offers hope for reducing poverty, especially amongst marginalized groups like small farm producers and women.

New Guide Seeks to Strengthen Trade Capacity of Poor Countries
Geneva (6 July 2009) - While the development debate on how to best solve the world’s poverty challenges usually fluctuates between calls for more aid or more trade, a new guide released today from the United Nations promotes both aid and trade, with a better and more efficient use of assistance provided. The guide is designed to help policy makers, trade officials and researchers conduct needs assessments for developing trade capacity, especially that which promotes inclusive economic growth with the ultimate goal of reducing poverty and achieving higher levels of human development.

United Nations Announces Venue for 7th Summit of the World Alliance of Cities Against Poverty
Geneva/ Rotterdam (6 Apr 2009) - The United Nations Development Programme and the City of Rotterdam today announced the venue for the 2010 World Alliance of Cities Against Poverty. 40 players to join Ronaldo and Zidane in Match Against Poverty

UNDP Launches Initiative to Strengthen Development Planning at Regional and Municipal Levels in Serbia
Geneva (6 Nov 2008) - The United Nations Development Programme launched a new initiative in Serbia to enable municipalities to draft regional developmental plans and to set up regional development agencies. The project, part of an international cooperation initiative called ART (Articulating Territorial and Thematic Networks of Cooperation for Human Development) was designed in close cooperation between the national government, the UNDP country office, and a team from the Geneva-based HUB for Innovative Partnerships. The Art Programme supports national and local governments in the implementation of their national decentralization policies, and promotes the implementation of a legal, operational, administrative and planning framework. Confronting Climate Change Challenges at the Local and Regional Levels

Geneva/Rabat (16 Oct 2008) - Football stars Ronaldo and Zinédine Zidane announced today that the sixth annual Match Against Poverty will take place in Fès, Morocco on 17 November. As Goodwill Ambassadors for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Ronaldo and Zidane will each captain an international team of world renowned footballers for this friendly game. The primary objective of the event is to mobilize the public in the fight against poverty and to promote the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which seek to halve world poverty by 2015. Sharapova launches scholarship programme for Chernobyl-affected youth
Geneva/Minsk (18 Sept 2008)- Tennis star Maria Sharapova announced today that she is launching a $210,000 scholarship programme for students from Chernobyl-affected areas of Belarus. The programme is a joint initiative of the Maria Sharapova Foundation and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), where she serves as Goodwill Ambassador. The scholarships will enable 12 talented young people from Chernobyl-affected regions to follow a full course of studies at two leading universities in Belarus. Read full article
